SHANGHAI, China -- Canadian pairs champions Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch finished second in the short program at the Cup of China on Friday, the third stop on figure skating's ISU Grand Prix circuit.

Moore-Towers, from St. Catharines, Ont., and Moscovitch, from Waterloo, Ont., scored 60.78 points for their performance to "Barsalino."

Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov of Russia are first heading into Saturday's free program with 64.65 points. China's Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao of China are third at 60.57.

Two weeks ago at Skate America, the Canadians won bronze after finishing just a point behind the Chinese pair, who claimed silver.

"We feel good about today's performance," Moscovitch said. "We went out, we did everything we needed to do. It wasn't our best short program that we've done. It wasn't as easy and smooth as we would have liked, but we worked through it and we got everything done and we're happy with the outcome."

Taylor Steele of Waterloo, Ont., and Robert Schultz of Puslinch, Ont., were seventh in the short program in their first competition of the season.

Artur Gachinski of Russia led the men's short program with a score of 81.64, Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan was second with 81.37 while American Jeremy Abbott was third with 79.32.

Kevin Reynolds of Coquitlam, B.C., was seventh.

There were no Canadians entered in women's singles or ice dance.

World bronze medallist Carolina Kostner edged American Mirai Nagasu in the women's short program.

Kostner's score of 61.88 points was almost a point better than Nagasu, who received a deduction on her triple Lutz-double toe loop combination.

World junior champion Adelina Sotnikova, making her senior international debut, was third heading into Saturday's free skate, the first time she hasn't been atop the standings since the 2010 Russian championships.
