Brad Ross scored once and added two assists Saturday as the Portland Winterhawks downed the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-2 in the Western Hockey League.
Ross, a Toronto Maple Leafs prospect, has nine points in five games this season. His breakaway goal off a turnover by Seattle's Dave Sutter gave Portland (3-2-0) a 1-0 lead 4:05 into the game.
Portland's Ty Rattie extended his season-opening goal-scoring streak to four games since being sent back to the WHL by the St. Louis Blues. The 2011 second-round pick gave the Winterhawks a 2-0 lead in the first period on his sixth goal of the season -- his fifth on the power play.
Elsewhere in the WHL, it was: Brandon 6, Saskatoon 0; Regina 4, Lethbridge 1; Prince Albert 7, Red Deer 2; Moose Jaw 7, Swift Current 4; Medicine Hat 4, Oil Kings 3 (SO); Kelowna 6, Vancouver 3; Victoria 6, Prince George 5; Spokane 7, Tri-City 2.
At Portland, Ore., Chance Lund scored his second goal in two games on a slapshot to bring the Thunderbirds within 2-1 with 7:42 left in the second period.
Portland reclaimed a two-goal lead when Charles Wells, who played 212 games for Seattle from 2007 to 2011, scored his first goal in five games since joining the Winterhawks after a trade with Prince Albert.
Marcel Noebeles scored on a rebound near the midway point of the third period to pull Seattle back within one, but Derrick Pouliot's empty-netter sealed the win for Portland.
Mac Carruth made 26 saves as the Winterhawks improved to 2-0 against the Thunderbirds this season. Calvin Pickard stopped 33 shots for Seattle.
