MONTREAL -- Mike Sorber has been named assistant coach of the Montreal Impact.
The former U.S. international midfielder has been an assistant coach with the American national team since 2007, where he worked with Impact head coach Jesse Marsch.
"Mike's experience both coaching and playing at the international level will be invaluable for our organization as we build towards 2012," Marsch said Wednesday in a statement.
The Impact will move from the NASL to Major League Soccer next year.
Sorber played 67 matches for the U.S. from 1992 to '98. He started all four U.S. games at the 1994 World Cup.
He also played five seasons in MLS with Kansas City, the New York MetroStars and Chicago.
Former assistant coaches Mauro Biello and Gil Orriols Jansana will remain with the club but their roles have yet to be determined.
On Tuesday, the Impact announced their first signing for their MLS squad, Colombian former Inter Milan defender Nelson Rivas.
