Calgary's Greg Wilson has kicked his way into the semifinal of this year's Wendy's Kick for a Million. The 51-year-old IT consultant took one step closer to a chance at $1 million by winning the Western Canada quarter-final event during halftime of the Saskatchewan at Calgary game at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Wilson defeated Daymeon Neno of Morinville, AB to advance to the Wendy's Kick for a Million semifinal, which takes place during halftime of the Winnipeg at Hamilton game at Ivor Wynne Stadium on October 7. Highlights and results of the Western Canada quarter-final are available on-demand at TSN.ca.
Wilson's opponent in the semifinal will be determined tonight at the Eastern Canada quarter-final between Mississauga, ON's Nick Green and Brockville, ON's Mike Tompkins at Rogers Centre during halftime of the Hamilton at Toronto game. Highlights and results of the Eastern Canada quarter-final will be featured in the second half of tonight's game on TSN (game begins at 7 p.m. ET) and will also be available on-demand at TSN.ca.
Wilson defeated Neno by a final score of 40 to 20 to advance to the next round. Both participants were given three kicks from distances of their choice, ranging from 15 to 50 yards, and were awarded points equal to the distance (i.e.: 15 yards = 15 points) for each successful field goal, with their final kick being a Wendy's Double and worth double the points.
Neno kicked off the competition by being wide left from 20 yards out, while Wilson split the uprights from the same distance. Neno and Wilson then exchanged successful field goals from 20 yards on their second attempt. For his final field goal attempt, Neno went back to the 25 yard line and was short, allowing Wilson to move on to the Wendy's Kick for a Million semifinal.
On October 7, Wilson and the winner of the Eastern Canada quarter-final will go head-to-head in the Wendy's Kick for a Million semifinal at halftime of the Winnipeg-Hamilton game on TSN (game begins at 7:30 p.m. ET). Following the same event format as the quarter-finals, the participant who scores the most points after three kicks will advance to the final in Toronto on October 14 and get the chance to kick a 50-yard field goal for $1 million. Highlights of the semifinal event will air during the second half of the game on TSN and will also be available on-demand at TSN.ca.
On October 14, the one remaining participant will attempt to win outstanding prizes by kicking field goals from 20-, 30-, 40- and 50-yards, live on TSN, during halftime of the CFL ON TSN: WENDY'S FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL broadcast featuring Calgary @ Toronto (game starts at 7:30 p.m. ET).
