Re: [SurroundSound] Re: Yamaha BDS1067

I will chime in as well as per the Oppo's value proposition, build quality, features, and support.  It costs a bit more but the SQ is simply as good as it gets outside using an external dac solution that would cost many times more than the oppo.  Six months after purchasing one I think there have been no less than 4 firmware updates.  Some of these have included improved streaming, ISO playback from hdd, ect.  All this AFTER the player came out.  I don't know too many companies actually ADDING features after market.  Particularly after the products been out nearly a year (speaking of the 93-the 95 came out a bit after my purchase).  My receiver and TV should be so lucky.  At the same time its no ps3 in that you have to download 18 updates before you can even use it!  The bonus of being able to play ripped SACDs and have a back up solution is priceless.  Very recommended.  I think you can almost predict the number of these players that support this feature declining in the near future.  Im sure sony isn't too thrilled to have their SACD's hacked and that would likely be the first manufacturer to lock down that feature if it's possible.  Definitely would not recommend a Sony--you're one update from the possibility of owning a brick.  As for Pioneer I think they are a pretty solid commercial audio company and would concur that Yamaha is much more interested in their Receivers than any other part of the chain.  FWIW I own a Yamaha receiver that replaced a Pioneer (the Yamaha is higher end model than the Pioneer, but still it's not entirely out of the question that they might even have the same DACs)...the Yamaha proved to be more musical to my ear while the Pioneer was more customizable but not as able to drive something like my B & W's. Oh wait, Im way off topic.  Nevermind.  :-)

Martin,
Not sure who makes Yamahas DVD players, but  a few years ago when I was selling home theater stuff Yamaha's players were being made by Phillips, whose build quality I always found kind of dicey.  DVD players were not really their focus as compared to something like surround receivers,    The situation may be different now, but that was the way it was in not so distant past.
Always had good luck with Pioneer players.  Compared to Phillips, Denon and Sony, Pioneers tended to keep working and be pretty reliable.    At the same time,  I see the Oppo name coming up all the time now, and when I make the jump to Blu-Ray, chances are I will be getting one of those.     - CP

Martin, Nice question. If you're looking to play ISO's, please consider the Oppo. You will get tons of support here. Take care, Tab On Sep 8, 4:31 am, martyh <martyn7...@gmail.com> wrote: > Can anyone confirm whether this will play the SACD-rips Iso files? > > I know it's on the official list but would be happier if someone on > here could verify that they have one or know someone that has one and > has used an SACD.ISO in the player > > Cheers -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "SurroundSound" group.
