This Juno goes to 11.
The annual Canadian music awards will hand out a trophy for metal / hard music album of the year beginning in 2012, organizers have announced.
The new category honours "artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence ... without regard to album sales or chart position," according to a statement. "Eligible albums include metal, metalcore, hardcore, heavy rock, thrash metal, death metal and their respective subgenres including (but not limited to) nu-metal, power metal, grindcore, extreme metal, industrial metal, viking metal, folk metal, doom metal, gothic metal, speed metal, and sludge metal."
For years, metal lovers have campaigned for a separate category, griping that the Junos have ignored the eternally popular genre.
Today, those headbanging hordes can finally raise their devil horns in triumph.
Metalheads (and other musicians) who want to submit their music for Juno consideration can log on to http://junosubmissions.ca starting Saturday, Oct. 1. Submissions will be accepted until January. The 41st annual Juno Awards will be held in Ottawa from March 26 to April 1.
