A Saskatoon hockey player says his family and friends received a distressing shock when initial reports suggested he had died in the plane crash in Russia that claimed the lives of most of the members of a hockey team.
Riley Armstrong was mistakenly listed as a player for the Russian team, which led to some reports indicating he may have perished in the crash.
However, Armstrong has never played for the Lokomotiv franchise and is living in Saskatoon.
The confusion led to a hectic day.
"You know, it was kind of a weird way to wake up this morning, when my phone's blowing off the hook, and it has my picture on CBC News that I was on the plane or I had died," Armstrong told CBC News Wednesday.
He said reflecting on the mistaken reports has made him appreciative of what he has.
"It's kind of like a second life, I guess, if you want to look at it that way."
Armstrong spent part of the day fielding phone calls from family and friends to clear up the confusion.
"It's all cleared up now and everyone of my family knows that I'm still alive and I'm still living."
Armstrong's brother, Colby, plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs and was also initially misinformed.
"It was kind of like a weird feeling for my brother," Armstrong said.
He says he has no idea how his name was linked to the Russian team that was on the plane.
Armstrong said he was a player in the KHL, a year ago, for a team based in Kazakhstan.
