Chelsea Aubry of Kitchener, Ont., led the way for Canada with 14 points and five rebounds.
Despite the loss, Canada took a significant step toward qualifying for the London Olympics at the tournament.
The winner gets an automatic berth at the 2012 Games, but by finishing in the top four Canada is guaranteed at least a spot in the worldwide 12-team Olympic Qualifying Tournament next summer.
Brazil took on Cuba in the other semifinal later Friday.
Montreal's Lizanne Murphy added 11 points and seven rebounds for Canada.
Paula Reggiardo had 18 points for Argentina, while Erica Sanchez added 13 of her own.
Canada trailed 23-10 after the first quarter, but improved at both ends of the floor in the second to cut the Argentine lead to 36-28 at the break.
Defence was the name of the game for Canada in the third as Argentina scored just seven points in the quarter to lead 43-40 heading to the fourth.
