The UFC is making a second trip to Toronto in 2011. Multiple sources told Sportsnet's (Showdown) Joe Ferraro on Tuesday night that UFC 140 will take place on Dec. 10 at the Air Canada Centre.
Following on the heels of UFC 129, the MMA organization's first sanctioned event in Ontario at the Rogers Centre on April 30 -- which had a UFC-record 55,724 in attendance -- it is taking a more modest approach in its return. The event will take place at the "ACC," the arena where the Maple Leafs and Raptors play and has a maximum capacity of roughly 19,800 for basketball games and concerts.
No bouts have been announced yet, but the event is expected to include top featherweight contender Mark Hominick, of Thamesford, Ont., and Toronto welterweight Sean Pierson.
The debut Toronto show was also the promotion's first attempt at holding an event at a stadium rather than the usual arenas or casinos, and it was highly successful, selling out the initial offering of about 40,000 tickets so fast that organizers opened up more seats. However, it appears the UFC will use the next show as a gauge as to whether demand is still as high for future shows in the city.
UFC 129 saw Hominick take 145-pound title-holder Jose Aldo the distance in a crowd-thrilling five rounds before welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre of Saint-Isidore, Que., defeated Jake Shields by unanimous decision in the main event. Pierson was also on that card, losing to late-replacement Jake Ellenberger.
