STANFORD, Calif. -- Vancouver's Rebecca Marino beat American Coco Vandeweghe 6-4, 6-4 in the first round at the Bank of the West Classic on Monday night.
Marino had five aces in the second set and won the match in one hour 13 minutes. She'll play No. 3 seed Marion Bartoli in the second round.
Fifth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland beat Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-2.
The 14th-ranked Radwanska is seeking her first WTA title in three years and is enjoying a solid season. She reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and the fourth round of the French Open.
American Christina McHale beat Croatia's Mirjana Lucic 6-1, 6-0 and will meet the winner of a later match between No. 8 seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia and Japan's Kimiko Date-Krumm.
