Don't expect My Greek Fat Financial Crisis to come to theaters soon.
Nia Vardalos, the star and screenwriter of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, is appalled at the meltdown taking place in her mother country.
"I am annoyed, I tell you," she told USA Today at Monday's premiere for her latest film Larry Crowne. "Just annoyed." Particularly galling to her is the recently released fact that 5 million Greeks did not pay income taxes for 2008. This is not a factor in the Greek-American world in her eyes. "Greeks in this country are very hard-working and we pay our taxes," she said proudly.
Suffice it to say she won't be finding screenwriting inspiration from the debacle which has international implications. "I do not think this could be made into a comedy," she sighed.
But Vardalos said she had the time of her life writing the screenplay for Larry Crowne alongside Tom Hanks, who also stars in the movie. Crowne has a financial meltdown of his own in the film and is forced to give up his house and drive a scooter. That story, at least, has a happy ending.
Her next film will move away from economics altogether. Vardalos co-stars as the mother in the upcoming American Doll movie.
