NEW YORK -- Toronto outfielder Jose Bautista looks like a good bet to become the first Blue Jay to be elected to start the all-star game since Carlos Delgado in 2003.
Bautista leads all major leaguers with 5.2 million votes, according to the latest results released Tuesday by Major League Baseball. Balloting ends Thursday night.
Jacoby Ellsbury has narrowed the gap on Josh Hamilton in fan voting for the final starting spot in the American League outfield. The all-star teams will be announced Sunday, except for a last reserve.
Hamilton is the only player outside the AL East who leads in the voting. The Texas slugger is about 120,000 votes ahead of Ellsbury, the Boston speedster.
Injured shortstop Derek Jeter, third baseman Alex Rodriguez, second baseman Robinson Cano, outfielder Curtis Granderson and New York Yankees catcher Russell Martin from Chelsea, Que., are ahead, as are Boston first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and designated hitter David Ortiz.
Entering play Tuesday night, Bautista was tied with New York's Mark Teixeira for the major-league lead with 23 home runs.
Bautista is aiming to become the first Blue Jay to finish as the leading vote-getter in the major leagues.
