from this month's HT magazine:
"UK Music Sales set an all-time record in 2010, selling 281.7 million
units, according to the British Phonographic Industry. Digital Sales
were up 30.6 percent, CDs down by 12.4 percent, and overall album
sales down by 7 percent, indicating that more consumers are
downloading single tracks....
"Universal and Sony will release new music to the download market on
the same day they hit the radio, presumably to head off illegal
downloading of hot tracks. It's incredible that the music industry
took this long to do something so obvious..."
And this one -- told you it was coming -- only affects video:
"Movie studios have realized a long-cherished dream by pushing analog
component video into a dungeon and throwing away the key.
"Prison bars come in the form of the Image Constraint Token (ICT),
which downconverts incoming high-def video to 540p. The ICT has been
embedded in Blu-ray's AACS digital rights management scheme since day
one, but its prescheduled implentation didn't befing until the turn of
the year. Blu-ray model announced after December 31, 2010, must
respond to the token...

"Wait, it gets better. Even if you're willing to tolerate a little
down-res in your video diet, analog outputs in general--also including
composite and S-video--will disappear entirely from Blu-ray player
back panels in 2013."
Folks, it looks like it's HDMI or the highway. Has anyone successfully
looked into unprotecting it's audio pathway?
