{allcanada} DE JONGE, DALTON WIN BRONZE AT CANOE AND KAYAK WORLD CUP

DUISBURG, Germany -- Mark de Jonge of Dartmouth, N.S., and Richard Dalton of Halifax both won bronze medals in Olympic events Sunday at the final stop on the canoe and kayak World Cup circuit.

De Jonge won his first career World Cup medal in the men's K-1 200, one of nine medals for Canada.

Piotr Siemionowski of Poland took the gold in 35.763 seconds with Sebastien Jouve of France following at 36.101. De Jonge was third at 36.379. Ottawa's Rhys Hill took seventh.

Ivan Shtyl of Russia was the winner of the men's C-1 200 in 39.918 seconds, Valentin Demyanenko of Azerbaijan placed second with 40.192 and Dalton followed in 40.365 for his second consecutive World Cup medal in the event.

In Olympic event B finals, Hughes Fournel of Lachine, Que., and Ryan Cochrane of Windsor, Ont., were first in the K-2 200 with Connor Taras of Dartmouth and Etienne Moreau of Lac-Beauport, Que., third.

Kia Byers of Regina was second in the women's K-1 200, Aaron Rublee of Kamloops, B.C., third in the C-1 200 and Una Lounder of Dartmouth and Genevieve Beauchesne-Sevigny of Trois-Rivieres, Que., fourth in the K-2 500.

Laurence Vincent-Lapointe of Trois-Rivieres, Que., collected double gold winning the C-1 200 and the C-2 500 with Mallorie Nicholson of Oakville, Ont. Nicole Haywood of Nanaimo, B.C., was second to Vincent-Lapointe in the C-1 200.

Adam Van Koeverden of Oakville, Ont., took silver in the K-1 500 with Angus Mortimer of Ottawa fourth. Canada earned another silver with the men's K-1 200 relay team comprised of Moreau, Taras, Hill and DeJonge.

Bronze medals were added to Canada's total by KC Fraser of Mississauga, Ont., in the women's K-2 200 with Mylanie Barre of Lac-Beauport, Que., and Kristin Gauthier of Ottawa ninth.

The men's C-1 200 relay team of Dalton, Andrew Russell, Gabriel Beauchesne-Sevigny of Trois-Rivieres and Rublee was third.

Canada ended the competition with 11 medals including four in the Olympic events.
