GANGNEUNG, South Korea -- Canada's Andrei Rogozine put himself in medal contention in men's competition Thursday at the world junior figure skating championships.

Rogozine of Richmond Hill, Ont., finished third in the short program with a personal best 67.27 points.

The 17-year-old trailed American Keegan Messing (72.58) and Artur Dmitriev of Russia (68.91).

Rogozine has had a solid season so far, winning two junior grand prix events and winning bronze at the junior grand prix final.

"My short program has been going well everyday in practice and I just went out there and did it," said Rogozine, who was sixth at the world juniors last year.

"I was really happy with myself, I felt like I had a lot of energy in that skate and did all the stuff and it went well."

Liam Firus of North Vancouver, B.C., is 24th.

In the pairs final, Wenjing Sui and Cong Han of China took the gold with Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov of Russia second and Narumi Takahashi and Mervin Tran of Japan third.

Canadian junior champions Natasha Purich of Sherwood Park, Alta., and Raymond Schultz of Toronto were fifth while Brittany Jones of Toronto and Kurtis Gaskell of Guelph, Ont., finished less than a point behind in sixth.

"The fifth place caps a great first season together for Natasha and Raymond," said Michael Slipchuk, Skate Canada's high performance director. "And to have two teams in the top-six earns us a third spot for next year."
