A free outdoor concert by k.d. lang is among the highlights of Luminato's 2011 Music Program, unveiled Tuesday morning in Toronto.
Lang's June 17 performance, the kick-off of her Canadian tour in support of her new album, Sing It Loud, is among the festival's 10 days of free music that will be staged for the first time in one downtown location, Metro Square at the corner of King and John Street.
Also performing free Metro Square shows will be opening night performers, Montreal-based trip-rock artists Beast and Halifax-based rockers, The Joel Plaskett Emergency (June 10); They Might Be Giants Family Show (June 11); the Kronos Quartet (June 12), and the Art of Time Ensemble (June 15).
"Luminato's free celebrations are the heart of the festival," said Luminato CEO Janice Price in a statement. "We are tremendously pleased that, for the entire festival, Metro Square will be home to free concerts, a festival box office, a gourmet street food fair, and a host of other free, participatory events."
The Kronos Quartet will also perform three other concerts that will effectively comprise their residency at Luminato 2011, with the Alim Qasimov Ensemble, (June 10, Koerner Hall); Afghan rubâb player Homayun Sakhi (June 11, Koerner Hall); and Wu Man, on the ancient Chinese pipa (June 15, location TBA). Ticket prices for all three shows range from $51.50 - $91.50.
Luminato takes place from June 10 - 19 and tickets go on sale April 16.
