With Jonas Gustavsson sitting idle, the Toronto Maple Leafs have put the struggling Swedish goalie on loan to the AHL.
Gustavsson, 26, will report to the Toronto Marlies on a conditioning assignment.
Gustavsson showed signs of establishing himself as a No. 1 goalie in his rookie season in 2009-10 despite dealing with a heart irregularity, but has taken a step back in his sophomore NHL campaign.
He has allowed 11 goals in his only two appearances this year, with an unsightly .840 save percentage. For the season, he has a 3.28 goals-against average in 23 appearances.
Veteran Jean-Sebastien Giguere has returned from a nagging groin injury, with upstart James Reimer impressing during Giguere's absence.
Gustavsson is under contract for next season at $1.35 million US.
