Canadian pop singer Nelly Furtado says she was paid $1 million in 2007 to perform at a hotel in Italy for members of the Gadhafi "clan," but that she now plans to donate the money.
Victoria-born Furtado's admission on her Twitter account comes in contrast to other Western pop stars who have kept quiet as news of their performances for the family of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi breaks as protests against Gadhafi's regime continue to rock the North African nation.
"In 2007, I received 1million$ from the Qaddafi clan to perform a 45 min. Show for guests at a hotel in Italy. I am going to donate the $," Furtado tweeted Monday morning.
The New York Times reported last week that pop stars Beyonce and Usher had been hired by Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's son Muatassim to perform for a New Year's Eve bash on the Caribbean island of St. Barts.
Mariah Carey was reportedly hired for the previous year's bash, and took home a reported $1 million for performing just four songs.
