SARDINIA, Italy -- Canadian David Boily captured the King of the Mountain jersey to highlight a strong showing by Team SpiderTech in the Giro di Sardegna.
The King of the Mountain jersey is awarded based on points accumulated by reaching selected mountain peaks.
"To capture the King of the Mountain jersey this early in the season means a lot to me," Boily said. "It's a huge motivator for me and the rest of the team.
"The jersey shows we are a competitive team and one that is going to challenge out competitors for the lead in every event we do."
Boily, a 20-year-old from Quebec City, finished 70th overall in the five-stage Giro di Sardegna, the second race of the 2011 season.
American Patrick McCarty was the top finisher for Team SpiderTech --Canada's first professional cycling team -- in 35th. Svein Tuft of Langley, B.C., was 39th, while American Lucas Euser was 59th.
"I'm very satisfied with the team results in Italy," said Steve Bauer, SpiderTech's team director. "The guys train all winter long, but until the racing starts you never know where you are in comparison to the other teams.
"We are already exceeding expectations and goals we set for ourselves this off-season -- it's going to be a competitive year."
Peter Sagan of Slovakia finished first overall, while Jose Serpa of Colombia was second, and Italy's Damiano Cunego third.
