{allcanada} CANADA DEFEATS U.S. IN CURLING AT WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES

ERZURUM, Turkey -- Canada edged the U.S. 6-5 in men's curling at the Winter Universiade on Tuesday.

The win by the Queen's University rink skipped by Jon Beuk of Kingston, Ont., improved Canada's preliminary round record to 4-3.

Canada scored two points in each of the second, fourth and seventh ends to build what looked like a comfortable 6-2 lead. But the Americans scored twice in the eighth and once more in the 10th to make it a close game.

Canada completes round-robin play at the world university games Wednesday with matches against South Korea (6-1) and Turkey (0-7).

In women's action, Regina's Brooklyn Lemon fell to 3-5 after an 8-4 loss to Germany and a 4-3 defeat to Russia.

Canada completes the preliminary round Wednesday against Turkey (0-8).

In biathlon, Kathryn Stone also of Camrose, Alta., was the top Canadian female finishing 29th in the 7.5-kilometre event. On the men's side, Jon Skinstad finished 30th in the 10 kilometres.

In alpine skiing, Kendall Brown of Toronto was the top Canadian female after the slalom portion of the super combined event in 26th place. Philippe Rivet of Greenfield Park, Que., sat 24th on the men's side.

In snowboarding, no Canadians advanced past the elimination round in the men's parallel giant slalom.
