Stephen MacAulay redeemed his Saint John Sea Dogs in overtime Sunday afternoon.
The top-ranked Sea Dogs squandered a 2-0 lead but MacAulay's heroics in the extra period beat the Moncton Wildcats 3-2 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.
Michael Kirkpatrick and Steven Anthony both scored with the man advantage as Saint John (31-5-2) seemed to have the game under control midway through the second period.
Scott Trask's power-play goal at the 13:44 mark of the second gave Moncton (20-15-5) some hope. Cole MacMillan forced overtime with 4:05 left in the third.
MacAulay's 11th of the season, a solo effort, ended the game 3:03 into overtime.
Steve Gleeson made 36 saves to earn the win in net for the Sea Dogs, while Frederic Piche stopped 24 shots for the Wildcats.
Saint John's power-play unit went 2-for-7, while Moncton was 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
A productive December has moved the Sea Dogs up the standings, with this latest victory putting them ahead of the Quebec Remparts for best record in the QMJHL.
Going 8-2 in its last 10 games has also put Saint John at the top of the Canadian Hockey League's weekly power rankings.
The Sea Dogs have now won two in a row, both against the Wildcats.
