At Thursday's state of the franchise address, Blue Jays' general manager Alex Anthopoulos indicated the team might acquire a third basemen before the season begins.
On Friday, the Internet was abuzz with talk he might be zeroing in on one as part of a rumoured three-team trade with the Seattle Mariners and the Oakland Athletics.
The chatter began Thursday night with the following report on The Contra Costa Times web site:
"A source with knowledge of the situation said the A's are trying to trade for Seattle infielder Chone Figgins, and that current A's third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and perhaps a pitcher could be shipped to the Mariners in return."
It is unknown what players the Blue Jays might send back in return.
Also Friday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Figgins has not been asked yet to waive his no trade clause.
The article's author, Susan Slusser, speculates:
"We know how frequently the A's swing deals that involve Toronto, but it makes more sense to me that Toronto might just be pursing Figgins separately. Or does monthlong A's property Edwin Encarnacion, now back with the Blue Jays, wind up in Seattle?"
Kouzmanoff, 29, will make $4.75 million in 2011 on a one-year deal. In 143 games last season he batted .247 (AVG) .283 (OBP) .396 (SLG) .679 (OPS) with 16 home runs and 71 RBI.
Figgins, 33, is owed $26 million over the next three years.
In 161 games last season Figgins batted .259 (AVG) .340 (OBP) .306 (SLG) .646 (OPS) with one home run and 35 RBI.
