EDMONTON -- Edmonton Eskimos president Rick LeLacheur dropped a bombshell Friday, announcing he has prostate cancer and will undergo surgery later this month.
"I was diagnosed this past summer and thanks to early detection the prognosis for a full recovery is excellent," the 62-year-old said in a statement. "I expect to be back on the job in late January ready to hit the ground running for the 2011 Eskimo season."
LeLacheur made the shocking revelation during a news conference announcing the hiring of Duane Vienneau as a vice-president with the CFL club.
LeLacheur joined the Eskimos in 2002 as their chief operating officer and was appointed president and CEO in December 2006. He is under contract to the CFL club through 2012.
Vienneau will officially join the Eskimos next month. LeLacheur also announced Greg Treble (business operations), Cathy Presniak (finance and administration) and Dave Jamieson (communications and marketing) have been named vice-presidents of the club.
