{allcanada} CHAMPION CAR OWNER PROFILE: Doug Kennington

In no other sport does family play such an important role as it does in racing. There's nothing individual about it. It takes complete dedication from a group of people to mount any measure of success. And where better to look for willing workers than family?

Doug Kennington and his son, DJ, have raced stock cars for 17 years with the first race coming just days after DJ got his driver's license in 1993. Over the years, together, they have experienced great accomplishments, as well as, a few disappointments. However, in 2010, whatever frustrations they have felt were eased by winning the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 championship.

Not only is the elder Kennington the car owner, he is also the engine builder. As more and more teams move away from 'built' motors to 'spec' engines for a variety of reasons, the Kenningtons are not ready to make that leap. And with the results, who could blame them? This season, their Kennington-powered Castrol Edge Dodge sped to five wins, five poles, nine top fives, 11 top 10s and a first series title.

"It was very gratifying to win this championship with a 'built' engine," said Doug Kennington.

But the sense of achievement goes well beyond the machinery under the hood. Fathers always have more invested in their children's endeavors than any of their own. The successes are always sweeter and the shortcomings are ten times as bitter.

"I couldn't be happier for DJ and the whole crew," Doug Kennington said. "They worked hard and achieved what we all set out to do at the beginning of the season."

If his father is not able to be at track, the first order of business for DJ at the conclusion of the race is to make a phone call and share the results of the day.

"He's been with me every step of the way – good and bad," said the younger Kennington. "Always supportive in every way possible. I sure couldn't have done this without him and this championship is way more about his dedication than anything I've done."
