CINCINNATI – The music director of Canada's Windsor Symphony Orchestra will take up the baton as conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.

Cincinnati orchestra officials said Monday that John Morris Russell will succeed award-winning conductor Erich Kunzel.

Kunzel headed the Cincinnati Pops from its founding in 1977 until his death in September 2009. He led the orchestra to international fame with sales of more than 10 million recordings.

Russell, a Cleveland native and former associate conductor, will take over as conductor Sept. 1.

Officials say the 50-year-old will move to Cincinnati while keeping his current Windsor post. He has served as guest conductor for orchestras including the New York Pops and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
