OTTAWA -- Joannie Rochette is taking the rest of the figure skating season off, but the Olympic bronze medallist hasn't closed the door on her competitive career.
The 24-year-old native of Ile-Dupas, Que., announced Tuesday she will skip the Canadian championships in January.
While missing the nationals doesn't necessarily rule her out for the world championships, Skate Canada said in a statement Rochette plans to spend the rest of the season performing in shows.
But she says she hasn't lost her competitive drive and plans to retain her amateur status.
"I am hoping to keep up that competitive spirit even though I am doing more shows now, and I do want to stay competitive within the skating circuit," she said in a release. "I will take my time to make a decision regarding competing in the future and I intend to keep my amateur status."
Rochette skipped the entire Grand Prix season this fall and has spent the past several months skating in shows and attending speaking engagements.
"I'm so glad that after the Olympics I've had the opportunity to appear in so many skating shows," she said. "I really enjoy skating for the fans in so many different cities and countries. I'm looking forward to performing in upcoming shows in Japan, Germany, Italy, the U.S.A. and Canada," said Rochette.
Rochette captured the hearts of skating fans in February when she won a bronze medal at the Vancouver Olympics less than a week after her mother Therese died of a heart attack.
The Canadian championships are set for Jan. 21-23 in Victoria.
