The B.C. Lions have called a news conference for Tuesday afternoon where it is expected Wally Buono will announce he will return as head coach for another season.
According to the Vancouver Sun, Buono is excited about coaching, especially with the prospect of having the Lions play in the 2011 Grey Cup at BC Place Stadium.
"At the end of the day, do I still have a passion for football? Yes," Buono told the Sun on Monday. "Do I still have a passion for winning? Yes. Do I still have a passion for the B.C. Lions? Yes."
After the Lions were eliminated by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Western Semi-Final, the 60-year-old Buono said he needed some time to decide his future. The report indicates Buono met with Lions owner David Braley and president Dennis Skulsky during Grey Cup week in Edmonton.
This year, the Lions started out 1-7 but rebounded in the second half of the season to finish at 8-10 and squeak into the playoffs on the final weekend of play. In 2009, the Lions missed the playoffs with a record of 8-10.
"The last two years, have they been the best? No," Buono told the Sun. "But are we starting to make progress in the right direction? Definitely."
