Valencia, Spain (Sports Network) - Top-seeded and defending champion Andy Murray was upset by gritty Argentine Juan Monaco in a second-round affair Wednesday at the $1.87 million Valencia Open.
Monaco dismissed the Australian Open runner-up Murray 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 on the indoor hardcourts at the City of Arts and Sciences.
The world No. 4 Murray, who was the Shanghai Masters titlist three weeks ago, bested Russian Mikhail Youzhny in last year's Valencia finale. A fifth- seeded Youzhny, who was last week's runner-up in St. Petersburg, pulled out of the Valencia draw here on Wednesday and was replaced by Spanish lucky-loser Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
Meanwhile, hot Gael Monfils was an opening-round winner on Day 3, as the eighth seed blew past Argentine Eduardo Schwank 6-3, 6-3. Monfils titled in Montpellier in his native France last week.
In some other first-round play, Spanish lucky-loser Marcel Granollers grounded French qualifier Benoit Paire 6-2, 6-4 and Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas handled the aforementioned Ramos-Vinolas 6-3, 6-4.
Second-seeded French Open runner-up Robin Soderling, fourth-seeded Spanish favorite David Ferrer, Russian star Nikolay Davydenko and the acrobatic Monfils will all take to the courts for second-round matches here on Thursday. Ferrer was the Valencia titlist in 2008.
