I currently utilise two solutions for my needs. I've a Linux based HTPC as a transport for
hi-rez multi channel and a Squeezebox 'classic' as a stereo and Multi channel DTS
transport. Both use the same receiver as a multi channel DAC to a 6 ch power amp.
The Linux HTPC is a dual core Atom based unit with an Nvidia ION GPU. It has an HDMI out
to the receiver. The GPU does all the heavy lifting and it will even play 24bit 192kHz 6
channel flac. Though it has a small fan (which you can barely hear), it functions
perfectly without it and is dead silent in this configuration because I have used an SSD.
Must have the TV on to use it though. I use both an IR remote control and wireless mouse.
The HTPC dimensions are 258mm x 210mm x 65mm and fits in with the rest of the gear in the
AV rack.
The Squeezebox server software also runs on the HTPC. I use the SB when I don't fancy
turning the TV on and just want stereo. For redbook stereo, it sounds as good as any CD
player I've heard when using an external DAC. The internal DAC isn't much chop and any
high end CD player's DAC will likely blow it away. I do not recommend using the analog
outputs. You can also play 24/48 multi channel DTS using a trick with a WAV wrapper and
flac. That's actually how I got into surround.
I can stream to them as well. I've run cat5 around the house, but both have wireless LAN
capabilities if needed.
If you are anti-HDMI and want to play multi channel hi-rez stuff via analog, then you'll
have to look for a windows based HTPC solution or go with something like a Dune player.
