According to numerous media reports, the Edmonton Oilers have placed defenseman Sheldon Souray and goaltender Martin Gerber on waivers.
Souray had just 13 points in 37 games last season due to a serious hand injury, but his relationship with the Oilers' front office deteriorated to the point of him asking for a trade when the season ended. When that didn't happen over the summer, GM Steve Tambellini told Souray to stay away from training camp.
Gerber had signed Aug. 6 due to uncertainty surrounding Nikolai Khabibulin and his recovery from back surgery. However, Khabibulin played all 60 minutes Sunday against Vancouver, allowing two goals on 28 shots. The team also has young goalies Devan Dubnyk and Jeff Deslauriers.
In two preseason games, Gerber stopped a total of 33 of 34 shots in 64 minutes of action.
