Kitchener Rangers defenceman Ben Fanelli has been denied medical clearance to participate in contact drills and scrimmages, the team announced on Friday.
Fanelli met with his doctor in Toronto earlier this week where he was told he could continue his rehab, but only in non-contact drills and off-ice workouts.
The young defenceman suffered a fractured skull in a game against the Erie Otters last October when he was crushed against the boards behind the net by a hit from Michael Liambas. OHL commissioner David Branch suspended Liambas for the remainder of the junior season, including the playoffs, effectively ending his junior career.
Liambas attended training camp with the Toronto Maple Leafs on an amateur tryout contract, but was released on Thursday.
