Defending Battle of the Blades champion Jamie Salé has been teamed with former NHL great Theo Fleury for the second season of the CBC-TV reality show.
Salé, who won gold at the 2002 Olympics with partner David Pelletier, skated to victory with former NHLer and fellow Albertan Craig Simpson in the first Battle of the Blades, which asks former hockey players to learn pairs figure skating.
The winning couple earns $100,000 for a favourite charity. The first season, the money went to The Spinal Cord Injury Treatment Centre (Northern Alberta) Society.
Salé and Fleury, a 15-season player and Stanley Cup champion with the Calgary Flames who also won Olympic gold and played for other NHL teams, are skating to support The Men's Project, a counselling service for men and their families.
Born in Oxbow, Sask., Fleury grew up in Russell, Man. His autobiography, Playing with Fire, chronicles his recovery from drug and alcohol addiction following a tumultuous youth when he alleges he was sexually abused by a onetime hockey coach.
The other Battle of the Blades teams released by CBC-TV on Sunday evening are:
- Violetta Afanasieva, who won the first Extreme Ice Skating World Championship, with former NHLer P.J. Stock, skating for One x One.
- Isabelle Brasseur, who won two Olympic bronze medals, with former NHL winger Todd Warriner, skating for The Heart & Stroke Foundation.
