MONTREAL -- Organizers of this week's NASCAR Nationwide series race in Montreal are looking for government help to attract more fans and ensure the event survives beyond 2011.

Race promoter Francois Dumontier hopes the federal and Quebec governments will contribute $500,000 each to help promote the race, particularly among American stock car enthusiasts.

He said the federal government is already on board and he is to meet this weekend with Quebec finance minister Raymond Bachand.

"It's not a subsidy, it's a partnership," Dumontier said.

The ultimate goal is to bring in the top level of NASCAR -- the Sprint Cup. The Nationwide series is one step below the Sprint Cup.

A five-year agreement with NASCAR to hold the race in Montreal winds up next year. NASCAR says government help is needed to make the event profitable.
