REGINA - The Saskatchewan Roughriders scored four second-half touchdowns and two more in overtime, as they rallied from a 14-point deficit for a 54-51 win over the Montreal Alouettes in CFL action Thursday night.
The game, played before a sell-out crowd of 30,945, was the 2010 season opener for both clubs and their first against each other since Montreal beat the Roughriders 28-27 in last year's Grey Cup game.
Just like in the Grey Cup, the Riders seemed to cost themselves a win by taking a too-many-men penalty. This time they were given a second chance, and made good on it.
Saskatchewan quarterback Darian Durant connected with Andy Fantuz on a 10-yard touchdown pass and hit Chris Getzlaf on the ensuing two-point convert attempt to give the Riders a 48-40 lead.
Montreal, which gave Saskatchewan first possession in overtime, failed to convert on third-down but the Roughriders were assessed a penalty for having too many men on the field, giving the Als a second chance at the end zone.
Avon Cobourne, the 2009 Grey Cup MVP, ran the ball to the two-yard line and Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo completed the touchdown pass and the two-point convert to S.J. Green to tie it up.
Montreal had first possession for the second round of overtime but could only manage a field goal.
Durant then completed a 32-yard pass to Weston Dressler to put the Riders within striking distance, and then hit Dressler with a three-yard toss in the end zone for the win.
Fantuz, Prechae Rodriguez, Rob Bagg, and Wes Cates all found the end zone in the second half for Saskatchewan, which tied the game in the final minute of regulation.
Calvillo threw touchdown passes of 39 and 48 yards to Kerry Watkins and Green in staking out a 14-3 first-quarter lead, and helped Montreal stretch it to 24-10 with a 34-yard throw to Watkins for another major in the second half.
Montreal's scoring was rounded out by a second-quarter field goal from Duval, a safety conceded by Saskatchewan punter Louie Sakoda, a 125-yard missed field goal return by Tim Maypray, and a one-yard touchdown run by Cobourne in the fourth.
Calvillo finished the game with 28 completions on 42 attempts for 368 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.
The Roughriders also got points on a touchdown run from Durant, a 17-yard field goal from Luca Congi, and a safety conceded by Duval.
Durant completed 30 of his 44 passes for 478 yards with five touchdowns and no picks.
Dressler led all receivers in the game with 10 catches for 154 yards.
