{allcanada} OILERS BUY OUT ROBERT NILSSON'S CONTRACT

As expected, the Edmonton Oilers bought out the remainder of Robert Nilsson's contract on Wednesday.

The 24-year old had one year remaining on his original three-year contract, and would have earned $2.5 million with a $2 million hit against the salary cap. He is now an unrestricted free agent.

Nilsson and teammates Ethan Moreau and Patrick O'Sullivan were all placed on waivers on Tuesday, and all three are now ex-Oilers. Moreau was claimed by the Columbus Blue Jackets, while O'Sullivan was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes for Jim Vandermeer.

Nilsson scored 11 goals and 16 assists in 60 games last season with the Oilers. He was a first-round pick (15th overall) of the New York Islanders in the 2003 draft.
