The Canadian Football League and the Toronto Argonauts have fined offensive tackle Rob Murphy an undisclosed amount for a series of Twitter posts he sent out Wednesday while the team was traveling to Montreal for Thursday's contest against the Alouettes.
"Pumped to be smelling foreigners this early in the A.M. They smell less offensive this way....little known fact," read one of Murphy's posts.
"Ok...the novelty of riding on a train thru Ontario and "Frenchland" has worn out....get me off this damn thing!!!!" was another post.
The league took exception to Murphy's comments and released the following statement:
"The Commissioner found the comments inappropriate and offensive and are not to be tolerated. The player has been fined under our social media policy."
While Murphy insists the comment was made in jest, the Argonauts organization believed the comments were entirely inappropriate and were in violation of the club's policy. As a result, Murphy was fined by the club as well.
The Buffalo, N.Y., native later posted an apology on his Twitter account.
"Obviously my recent tweets have gotten blown out of proportion. I'm sorry if I offended anyone by my recent comments. I was JOKING around."
