Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving said Tuesday he wants Easton Cowan to see game action, whether that's at the NHL level or in the AHL.
The 20-year-old winger was not named to the team's opening-night roster on Monday despite a promising training camp with the team.
"Today, he's not on the roster and then we'll see what happens tomorrow," Treliving told reporters. "Easton has had a really good camp. He's right there ready to play for us. We want to manage it appropriately.
"If he's going to be playing with us here, great, but if not, I want him playing."
Cowan worked as the team's 13th forward in practice Sunday before Monday's roster was announced. The Maple Leafs also needed an additional roster spot after picking up Sammy Blais off of waivers from the Montreal Canadiens.
Cowan authored an impressive campaign with the London Knights last year. He posted 29 goals and 69 points in 46 games, adding 13 goals and 39 points in 17 playoff games as London repeated as OHL champions.
At the Memorial Cup, the 2023 first-round pick posted three goals and seven points to tie for the tournament lead in scoring and took home the Stafford Smythe Trophy as tournament MVP.
No timeline on Woll's return
Treliving said Tuesday that things are progressing well with Joseph Woll, but the goaltender remains without a timeframe for return.
"No updates there," Treliving said. "We think things are progressing well, but I can't give you a time frame right now. He's doing well. He's doing really well."
Woll has been away from the team since taking a leave for a "personal family matter" on Sept. 23.
With Woll absent, the Maple Leafs claimed Cayden Primeau off waivers on Monday and he was named to the team's opening-night roster behind starter Anthony Stolarz.
The 27-year-old American is set to enter his fourth season in the NHL after posting a 27-14-1 record alongside a 2.73 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage over a career-high 42 games in 2024-25.
Woll appeared in seven playoff games last spring, going 3-4 with a 3.56 goals-against average and a .886 save percentage.
Selected by the Maple Leafs in the third-round of the 2016 NHL Draft, Woll begins a new three-year, $10.98 million contract, featuring an average annual value of $3.66 million, in 2025-26.
