Tyler Toffoli will be out eight weeks for the Montreal Canadiens after having hand surgery.
The forward was injured during a 4-3 overtime loss to the Nashville Predators on Dec. 4. He had two assists in 13:00 of ice time and led the Canadiens with 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) at the time of the injury.
The Canadiens, who visit the St. Louis Blues on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; TVAS, CITY, SNE, BSMW, ESPN+, NHL LIVE), will also be without defenseman Jeff Petry, who has missed three games with an upper-body injury, and forward Jake Evans, who sustained an undisclosed injury in a 2-0 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday.
Forward Josh Anderson is out 2-4 weeks because of an upper-body injury, and forward Brendan Gallagher and defenseman Sami Niku are in NHL COVID-19 protocol. Goalie Carey Price, defenseman Joel Edmundson (undisclosed), and forward Paul Byron (undisclosed) have yet to play, and defenseman Shea Weber (undisclosed) is out for the season.
"Obviously, it's not the ideal situation," Canadiens coach Dominique Ducharme said Dec. 4. "It's not what we planned for, that's for sure. We had, what, nine guys that were out today, and that doesn't include a guy like Weber. … Hopefully at one point it's going to stop, and everyone comes back healthy."
Toffoli led the Canadiens in goals (28) and points (44) in 52 games last season and scored 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 22 Stanley Cup Playoff games to help Montreal reach the Cup Final where it lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in five games.
