VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Canucks have cancelled practice after two players tested positive for COVID-19.
The club says it was informed of defenceman Luke Schenn's positive result on Monday and winger Juho Lammikko's positive result on Tuesday morning.
Both players have been placed in the NHL's COVID-19 protocol and Tuesday's morning skate was cancelled as a precaution.
Speaking to the media Tuesday afternoon, Canucks president Jim Rutherford said that both Schenn and Lammikko have symptoms but he wasn't sure what specific symptoms those were.
"We're working through all league protocols at this point in time. Players have been tested again this morning and will get the results late this afternoon," Rutherford said, emphasizing how important it is for everyone to follow health and safety guidelines. "It appears it needs to be a bigger number (of positive tests) than what we're dealing with right now for the game to be cancelled (per NHL protocol) tonight."
The team was tested again on Tuesday morning and results are expected to be received before the Canucks host the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night.
The positive results come after the Carolina Hurricanes placed centres Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis and a member of the training staff in COVID protocol on Monday. The Canucks hosted the Hurricanes on Sunday night and Tuesday's contest between the Hurricanes and Wild was postponed after more members of the Carolina franchise tested positive.
Vancouver was the NHL team hit hardest by COVID-19 last season, with 21 players and four coaches testing positive for the virus, and several games being postponed.
