{allcanada} McCann traded to Maple Leafs by Penguins

Jared McCann was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs by the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday for forward prospect Filip Hallander and a seventh-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

McCann, who has one season remaining on a two-year, $5.88 million contract he signed Sept. 18, 2020, scored 32 points (14 goals, 18 assists) in 43 games this season. The 25-year-old forward set NHL career highs in points per game (0.74), power-play goals (seven), power-play points (10) and plus/minus (plus-17).

Selected by the Vancouver Canucks with the No. 24 pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, McCann has scored 155 points (66 goals, 89 assists) in 353 regular-season games with the Canucks, Florida Panthers and Penguins. He has three assists in 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Pittsburgh was unlikely to protect McCann from the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft presented by Upper Deck, which will be held Wednesday (8 p.m. ET; ESPN2, SN, SN NOW).

Each NHL team can protect seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie, or eight skaters (forwards/defensemen) and one goalie. Any player who has a no-move clause must agree to waive it to be exposed. The deadline for teams to submit protected lists was Saturday at 5 p.m. ET.

Hallander, a 21-year-old forward, scored 24 points (13 goals, 11 assists) in 51 games for Lulea HF of the Swedish Hockey League this season. Originally selected by the Penguins in the second round (No. 58) of the 2018 NHL Draft, he was traded to the Maple Leafs as part of the deal for forward Kasperi Kapanen on Aug. 25, 2020.
