{allcanada} Maple Leafs sign Jason Spezza to one-year extension

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed veteran forward Jason Spezza to a one-year contract extension, the team announced Wednesday.

The deal is worth a league-minimum $750,000.

"I feel like there's a lot of unfinished business," Spezza said earlier this month after the Leafs were eliminated from playoffs. "I feel very invested in the group here, and hopeful that I get another opportunity to do that again next year and push this team over the top."

The 2021-22 season will be Spezza's third with the Maple Leafs after signing one-year contracts with the team in each of the last two off-seasons. The 38-year-old recorded 10 goals and 30 points in 54 regular-season games in the shortened 2021 campaign, adding three goals and five points in seven post-season contests.

Next season will be Spezza's 19th in the NHL and he'll enter it just 30 points from reaching the 1,000-point mark for his career. The Toronto native has recorded 351 goals and 970 points in 1,177 career games.
