For the first time in over two decades, the Canadian men's soccer team will play in the last stage of World Cup qualifying.

Canada advanced to the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying for the first time since 1997 after beating Haiti 3-0 (4-0 on aggregate) in the second leg of their second round playoff Tuesday night from SeatGeek Stadium in Illinois.

The difference came in the 46th minute with Haitian goalkeeper Josue Duverger allowed a disastrous own goal to give Canada the 1-0 lead. Cyle Larin added a goal in the 74th to seal the deal. Junior Hoilett scored late in the 88th minute.

The Canadians needed a win or tie to advance to the final round.

Canada, ranked 70th in the world, will join Mexico, United States, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama and El Salvador in the Octagonal to be played later this year and in early 2022. The top three teams in that tournament will advance to the World Cup while the fourth placed team will advance to the inter-confederation playoffs.

Canada's only World Cup appearance in men's soccer came in 1986 in Mexico where they went winless and failed to score a goal.

The 2022 World Cup is scheduled to take place in Qatar in late 2022.
