{allcanada} Robert Wickens drives in kart for first time since devastating crash

Robert Wickens continues to reach new milestones in his recovery from a spinal cord injury.

The Canadian driver released a video on his Twitter account of him driving in a kart for the first time since his devastating crash back in 2018.

Wickens drove around a circuit in a modified kart with hand controls for the throttle and brake. The Toronto native hopes this will take him one step closer to returning to competitive racing.

The 31-year-old has been working hard to recover from a long list of injuries suffered from his crash at Pocono Raceway on Aug. 19, 2018, including: a thoracic spinal fracture, a spinal cord injury, a neck fracture, tibia and fibula fractures to both legs, fractures in both hands, fractured right forearm, a fractured elbow, four fractured ribs and a pulmonary contusion.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Wickens was participating in virtual races as part of his rehab program, which included him relearning how to walk.

At the 2019 Honda Indy Toronto, Wickens drove in a modified Acura NSX, which had a throttle on a ring around the steering wheel along with a hand-operated brake.
