{allcanada} Malkin scratched by Penguins against Maple Leafs

PITTSBURGH -- Evgeni Malkin was scratched by the Pittsburgh Penguins with an illness on Tuesday after failing to complete warmups prior to the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The center, who was a full participant in morning skate, leads the Penguins with 58 points (18 goals, 40 assists) in 44 games this season but did not have a point in the past two games.

Rookie forward Anthony Angello entered the lineup and scored his first NHL goal in a 5-2 win. It was his fifth NHL game.

Malkin missed 11 games in October with a lower-body injury and two games in December with an illness.

He tripped over Penguins defenseman Kris Letang and tumbled into the boards midway through the second period of a 7-2 win against the Blue Jackets on Oct. 5.

Malkin had 38 points (11 goals, 27 assists) in his 26 games when center Sidney Crosby was recovering from core muscle surgery. Pittsburgh was 18-6-4 in those games (Nov. 12-Jan. 12).

The Penguins on Tuesday said forward Zach Aston-Reese is week to week with a lower-body injury. He was injured midway through the second period of a 5-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday.

Aston-Reese had 13 points (six goals, seven assists) and was plus-6 in 57 games this season.

Pittsburgh also is without forwards Jake Guentzel (shoulder) and Nick Bjugstad (core). The Penguins on Feb. 10 traded for forward Jason Zucker.
