{allcanada} March 25: Gretzky gets 200 points in one season

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: March 25

1982: Wayne Gretzky reaches another scoring mark once considered unreachable when he becomes the first player in NHL history to score 200 points in one season.

Point No. 200 comes when No. 99 assists on a first-period goal by Pat Hughes in the Edmonton Oilers' 7-2 win against the Calgary Flames at Stampede Corral. Gretzky also assists on a goal by Dave Semenko later in the period and sets another NHL record by scoring two shorthanded goals in a span of 27 seconds in the second period.

Gretzky finishes the night with 203 points; he ends the season with 212.

MORE MOMENTS

1924: The Canadiens defeat the Calgary Tigers 3-0 in Game 2 of the Final (played in Ottawa), to become the 1924 Stanley Cup champions. Georges Vezina gets the shutout to help the Canadiens win the Cup for the first time since the formation of the NHL in 1917-18.

1943: Busher Jackson scores the first overtime shorthanded goal in Stanley Cup Playoff history to give the Boston Bruins a 3-2 win against the Canadiens in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Semifinals. Jackson scores the winner at 3:20 of OT.

1951: Detroit Red Wings forward Alex Delvecchio plays in his first NHL game and rookie goaltender Terry Sawchuk earns his 11th shutout of the season in a 5-0 victory against the visiting Canadiens. The Red Wings become the first NHL team to reach 100 points in a season.

1962: Bobby Hull becomes the third player in NHL history to score 50 goals in a season, tying the record shared by Maurice Richard and Bernie Geoffrion. Hull reaches the milestone and gives the Chicago Blackhawks a 1-0 lead when he beats Gump Worsley 4:58 into the first period, but the New York Rangers win the game 4-1 at Madison Square Garden.

1972: Hull joins Gordie Howe as the only NHL players with 600 goals when he scores with 2:26 remaining to give the Blackhawks a 5-5 tie with the Bruins at Boston Garden. Despite allowing five goals, Boston goaltender Gerry Cheevers extends his personal unbeaten streak to 32 games (24-0 with eight ties).

1980: Pierre Larouche scores his 49th and 50th goals in the Montreal Canadiens' 8-4 win against the Chicago Blackhawks at the Forum, becoming the first player in NHL history to reach the 50-goal mark with two teams. Larouche gets No. 50 when he scores with 25 seconds remaining in the third period. Four years earlier, Larouche scores 53 goals with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

1995: Scotty Bowman becomes the first coach in NHL history with 900 regular-season victories when the Detroit Red Wings defeat the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 at Pacific Coliseum. The win gives Bowman an NHL record of 900-417 with 236 ties.

2000: Pavel Bure of the Florida Panthers scores twice in a 4-2 win against the visiting Canadiens. It's the 89th goal of the season for the Bure brothers, Pavel and Valeri (Calgary Flames), breaking the single-season mark set by Bobby Hull and Dennis Hull, who combine for 88 with the 1968-69 Chicago Blackhawks. The Bures finish with 93 goals -- 58 by Pavel, 35 by Valeri.

2004: Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo makes 42 saves in a 3-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes to give him an NHL-record 2,219 for the season. Luongo breaks the record of 2,214 set by Felix Potvin of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1996-97. Luongo finishes the season with 2,303.

2018: Boston's Brad Marchand ties the NHL single-season record for overtime goals when he scores 28 seconds into OT to give the Bruins a 2-1 victory against the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center. It's his fifth OT goal of the season, tying him with Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning (2011-12), Jonathan Toews of the Blackhawks (2015-16) and Alex Galchenyuk of the Canadiens (2016-17).
