{allcanada} Winnipeg Jets acquire Kevin Hayes from New York Rangers

The New York Rangers have traded forward Kevin Hayes to the Winnipeg Jets.

In return, the Rangers receive 22-year-old forward Brendan Lemieux and a 2019 first-round draft pick. If the Jets go on to win the Stanley Cup, the Rangers will receive an additional fourth-round selection in 2022.

Hayes, 26, is playing out a one-year deal signed with the Rangers last summer, carrying a cap hit of $5.175 million.

The big-bodied forward has 14 goals and 42 points through 51 games so far this season. He's bested the 40-point mark in all but one of his five seasons in New York, topping out at 49 points in 2016-17. The Boston native amassed a career-high 25 goals in 76 games for New York last season.

The Rangers have been active in dealing their soon-to-be unrestricted free agents ahead of the 2019 deadline. Longtime Ranger Mats Zuccarello was traded to the Dallas Stars on Saturday in another key deadline deal for the club, as New York looks to retool heading into the 2019-20 campaign.

Lemieux appeared in 44 games for the Jets this season, scoring nine goals and adding two assists.
