Re: [SurroundSound] Re: EoH New Shares

That is a basic way of doing it, although it really should have been 5.0 as "There is no .1 in Ambisonics".

The reason is pretty obvious, having just a single sub-woofer disrupts the complex phase information thereby reducing the possibility of image creation.

If you really want to use a sub-woofer then you'd need 5 of them, so it would be 5.5. Better not use them at Al though as there are more complex issues when it comes to using unmatched sub and main speakers.

But, that's the "correct position". If you enjoyed it, who cares.

I got favourable results a few years ago converting a live recording by the group Runrig into a surround FLAC format.

The album had been recording using an ambisonic microphone etc.

This was done using an ambisonic VST plugin via Foobar on a windows PC and converting it to "5.1" audio.

Sounded ok played back on my surround system.

It is. The quadraphonic matrices are just four separate channels that have been mathematically mixed into a two channel format using the combination of phase and amplitude mixing.

To return the encoded two channels back to the original four channel source requires the inverse of the encoding to be accurately performed.

Basically that's it, but in practice there are separation issues that require further work to be performed.

Basically the matrices are 4-2-4, where you are returning something back to it's original form, whereas up-mixing could be seen as 2-4 or 2-5, where you are creating something that did not originally exist.

Is a Ambisonic/SS creation really an upmix?

Yes, if you make from a stereo something that should be hearable in 4 or 5.1 channels, it's an upmix ;-)

And yes, music is personal taste...... I recommended Elvis' upmixes because a certain well known producer said he liked the sound (and many others fwiw).
A pity you don't like him, but that says nothing about the upmix, right ? It's not my favorite either ......

Now I notice something strange : decoding quad ? IS THAT NATURAL SOUND ???? NATURAL MIXED ???
