The New York Rangers' subpar season just got worse as winger Pavel Buchnevich is out indefinitely after being injured on a collision with Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jake Gardiner Thursday night.
Buchnevich did not practise with his team Friday morning because of what the Rangers described as an upper-body injury. Rangers beat reporter Larry Brooks of the New York Post reports Buchnevich sustained a concussion.
As you can see in the video at the top of the page, the innocent-looking play occurred roughly four minutes into the second period of what ended up being a 4-0 Leafs victory. Gardiner and Buchnevich collided near centre ice with Gardiner's left elbow making contact with the right side of Buchnevich's face.
Gardiner was not assessed a penalty and Buchnevich did not return to the game.
The Russian is having a breakout sophomore season, tied for second in team scoring with 32 points in 50 games.
It is currently unclear how much time Buchnevich will miss.
