The Hamilton Tiger-Cats took the interim tag off June Jones Monday, officially naming him the team's head coach.
Jones started as an assistant coach with the Tiger-Cats upon joining the team back on Aug. 2, when it held a record of 0-5 and had just come off a 60-1 thumping at the hands of the Calgary Stampeders. He was promoted to head coach after Kent Austin stepped down from the position with the team 0-8. Austin remains the team's vice president of football operations.
"What June accomplished here as a head coach in the last half of the 2017 season was nothing short of remarkable," Austin said Monday in a release. "He is a strong leader with high character and extensive football knowledge, and we know he will be relentless in his efforts to put a winning product on the field in pursuit of a Grey Cup."
Jones went on to lead Hamilton to a final record of 6-12 in 2017.
"I'm extremely excited to build on where we left off last season and ultimately continue working towards bringing a Grey Cup back to Hamilton," said Jones. "I really felt an immediate connection with our players and this community when I arrived last season, and I'm grateful to Bob Young, Scott Mitchell and Kent Austin for this opportunity."
Prior to arriving in the Steel City, Jones served as the head coach at Southern Methodist (NCAA) and Hawaii prior to that. He also had a stint in the NFL, coaching the Atlanta Falcons from 1994 to 1996, and was co-offensive coordinator for the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1986.
