The Toronto Blue Jays made some roster moves prior to Friday's series opener in Tampa Bay, claiming right-hander Cesar Valdez from the Oakland Athletics and designating right-handed pithcer Mat Latos for assignment.

Valdez was optioned to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, while the team also activated right-hander Neil Ramirez.

Valdez, who was designated for assignment on Wednesday, has allowed 10 earned runs on 14 hits over 9.1 innings this season. In his four outings, he allowed three or more runs three times and was tagged for three home runs in one inning on Tuesday against Minnesota.

Ramirez, 27, appeared in nine games this season for the San Francisco Giants and posted a 13.06 ERA in 10.1 innings with 18 strikeouts and four walks. He was designated for assignment on Sunday after making the team out of spring training on a minor-league deal. Ramirez has also played for the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers and Minnesota Twins during his four-year MLB career.

Latos, 29, allowed four home runs in his start against the New York Yankees on Tuesday and has a 6.60 ERA in 15 innings this season with the Blue Jays.
